HAYWARD, WISCONSIN – September 28, 2023 – The 50th Anniversary Slumberland American Birkebeiner has witnessed an unprecedented rate of registrations for the 2024 event. As a result, the iconic Slumberland American Birkebeiner 50K/53K race has closed its registration earlier than ever before, on September 27, 2023. As of closing, nearly 7,500 participants were registered for the Saturday event. The overwhelming response from enthusiastic skiers highlights the deep-rooted love and anticipation for this historic race.
While registration for Saturday’s 50/53k race may be closed, the celebration is far from over! The American Birkebeiner Ski Foundation (ABSF) is happy to report that spots are still available in the Kortelopet, Prince Haakon, and all three Open Track events. With over 4,000 individuals already registered for these events, ABSF expects them to fill faster than usual. Skiers who choose to participate in events earlier in the week will experience the thrill of skiing on these legendary trails and have the opportunity to watch skiing sensations like Jessie Diggins and other World Cup skiers in action on Saturday.
Jessie Diggins, Olympic gold medalist and World Cup champion, will be participating in this year’s Slumberland American Birkebeiner, adding an extra layer of excitement to the celebration. This is the first time Diggins will ski in the race, although she has topped the podium twice in the Kortelopet (2008 and 2009). Her presence, along with other elite skiers, promises to make the 50th Anniversary Slumberland American Birkebeiner an unforgettable experience for all participants and spectators.
“The response to our 50th Anniversary Slumberland American Birkebeiner has been nothing short of incredible,” said Ben Popp, Executive Director of the American Birkebeiner Ski Foundation. “While we are truly humbled by the overwhelming interest in the American Birkebeiner, we are equally excited to invite skiers of all levels to participate in the Kortelopet, Prince Haakon, and Open Track events. These races offer a unique chance to be part of the festivities and witness some of the world’s best skiers up close.”
The Kortelopet, a 29km race, and the Prince Haakon, a 15km race, offer skiers of all abilities the chance to embrace the rich history and breathtaking beauty of the American Birkebeiner Trail. For those who prefer a less crowded race experience, the Open Track events offer skiers the option to enjoy the same distances with fewer participants on the course–all while feeling the excitement of the event in a supportive environment.
As ABSF looks ahead to the highly anticipated Birkie Week 2024, which is expected to draw more spectators and participants than ever before, they invite you to be a vital part of this historic celebration! ABSF relies on the dedication and enthusiasm of volunteers to ensure the smooth operation and success of this event. Whether you are participating, spectating, or living in the area, there are many volunteer opportunities throughout the week!
