RUNNING STORIES: From Colorado to Wisconsin: Brian’s Birkie Trail Run Adventure

In our ongoing Birkie Trail Run Story series, we’re excited to share Brian’s journey. Hailing from Colorado, he brings a unique perspective to his Birkie experience. Read on for his story:

“I am so excited to come out to Wisconsin. I have heard that the Birkie Nordic Ski race is iconic with a rich history. After reading that the Birkie Trail Run is hosting the USATF trail marathon national championships and my attention was captured. In 2022 I won the USATF trail marathon national championship in Moab, Utah. Getting the opportunity to compete for another national title in a new location lights my fire. Some of my mentors Andy Wacker and Joseph Gray have raced here a few times before. I look forward to following in their footsteps and testing my mettle alongside some of the best.

Beyond the competitive aspects of this race I feel a draw to Birkie for a variety of reasons. When I was a student athlete at Wheat Ridge high school Donald “Dart” Schwaderer was one of the cross country alumni ahead of me. Dart went to the University of Wisconsin to run as a badger. He has been one of my largest inspirations throughout my running journey and heading to Wisconsin feels like I am following in his footsteps. He always spoke about Wisconsin with such high regard for the community, I can’t wait to experience it for myself. Being among the fall colors, rolling hills, and running community in Wisconsin this September will be such a fun experience. I look forward to trying some authentic cheese curds and meeting local cheese heads”.
